Understanding the LANAP protocol for patients with periodontal disease
Periodontal disease is a unique dental condition that causes an infection in the smile that can contribute to an infection elsewhere in the body. This is why gum disease needs to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid the chance of spreading. In fact, patients who have periodontal disease have a much higher risk of experiencing medical conditions such as heart disease and or strokes. At I-Rise Dental Boutique of Del Mar, California, our dental team can help you get a proper diagnosis of your condition and discuss treatment with options such as the LANAP protocol. With the integration of laser gum treatment, patients can enjoy gum tissue regeneration in a safe and minimally invasive manner.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal or gum disease is a dental infection in the mouth that can cause the gradual loss of bone, gum tissue, and even natural teeth. With an early diagnosis and effective laser gum treatment in the first stages, many patients can reverse the issue and bring their smiles back to health. This is often done at I-Rise Dental Boutique with our advanced LANAP protocol using the LAR(tm) device.
What is the LANAP protocol?
The LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) protocol is a minimally invasive dental treatment for periodontal disease. This procedure involves using a laser to remove the infected tissue, bacteria, and plaque from the gum pocket while preserving the healthy tissue. It then seals the treated area with a clot that allows for healing. This technique has been used successfully in thousands of patients over the years with the LAR(tm) device.
To better understand this treatment, think of the LASIK procedure used to treat the eyes. This is the equivalent of gum restoration. It provides laser stem cell-induced regeneration that rebuilds the gum tissue and restores the smile’s health with today’s technology!

The LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)
This is the video animation of the FDA-cleared laser periodontal procedure called Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or LANAP. The Periolase fiber, about the size of three human hairs, is gently placed between the gum and teeth to remove the diseased tissue inside the pocket. This laser fiber selectively removes the diseased tissue and kills the germs that cause gum infections, while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This also improves access and visibility for better removal of the barnacles of calculus from the surface of the teeth. Tiny ultrasonic root cleaners vibrate these deposits away and flush them out with anti-bacterial rinse. Once the surfaces of the teeth are clean, the laser is used a second time, at the bottom of the pocket to remove any remaining debris and to sterilize the pocket, soft tissue, root, and bone. This also causes the blood to become sticky, creating a seal around the teeth. Once the seal is formed, we have created a clean, closed, and stable environment for healing to begin. We have tipped the scales in favor of regeneration versus degeneration.
