Understanding the LANAP protocol for patients with periodontal disease

LANAP Certified Clinician Badge

Periodontal disease is a unique dental condition that causes an infection in the smile that can contribute to an infection elsewhere in the body. This is why gum disease needs to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid the chance of spreading. In fact, patients who have periodontal disease have a much higher risk of experiencing medical conditions such as heart disease and or strokes. At I-Rise Dental Boutique of Del Mar, California, our dental team can help you get a proper diagnosis of your condition and discuss treatment with options such as the LANAP protocol. With the integration of laser gum treatment, patients can enjoy gum tissue regeneration in a safe and minimally invasive manner.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal or gum disease is a dental infection in the mouth that can cause the gradual loss of bone, gum tissue, and even natural teeth. With an early diagnosis and effective laser gum treatment in the first stages, many patients can reverse the issue and bring their smiles back to health. This is often done at I-Rise Dental Boutique with our advanced LANAP protocol using the LAR(tm) device.

What is the LANAP protocol?

The LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) protocol is a minimally invasive dental treatment for periodontal disease. This procedure involves using a laser to remove the infected tissue, bacteria, and plaque from the gum pocket while preserving the healthy tissue. It then seals the treated area with a clot that allows for healing. This technique has been used successfully in thousands of patients over the years with the LAR(tm) device.

To better understand this treatment, think of the LASIK procedure used to treat the eyes. This is the equivalent of gum restoration. It provides laser stem cell-induced regeneration that rebuilds the gum tissue and restores the smile’s health with today’s technology!

Regrow Healthy Gums with LANAP Laser Therapy - Gum Disease Treatment

Regrow Healthy Gums with LANAP Laser Therapy - Gum Disease Treatment at I-Rise Dental Boutique in Del Mar, CA
LANAP laser therapy is revolutionizing the way we treat periodontitis and gingivitis. Using FDA-approved laser technology, it targets only diseased tissue, eliminates harmful bacteria, and encourages your body’s own stem cells to rebuild healthy gum and bone tissue - all without surgery.

Have you been told that you have gingivitis or periodontitis?

Traditionally, if you go to any specialist, the number one option that’s presented to you is let’s wait and watch, and then when it becomes severe, then you go under the knife or you get the gum surgery done and the recovery for that is wrong and painful. So it’s important to understand that you have options out there. And the laser therapy is number one on the list to help you to be able to restore the gum health.

LANAP, which is Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure is an FDA clear technology that we can use to help recreate your gum attachment and your regeneration of your bone using your own stem cells. There is no cutting or sewing involved, minimal bleeding to almost none. The recovery is amazing, the scientifically backed where the laser technology uses to remove just the right amount of inflamed tissue and the bad bacteria to eliminate the inflammation, and it actually induces your body’s own stem cells to help regenerate gum and bone health to the point where we even have hope for the hopeless teeth. And also you can help those failing implants

To see if you’re a good candidate for laser assisted regeneration to restore your gum health and your overall health. Please give us a call and come visit us so we can help you on your journey to great oral health.

The LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Animation video about The LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

This is the video animation of the FDA-cleared laser periodontal procedure called Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or LANAP. The Periolase fiber, about the size of three human hairs, is gently placed between the gum and teeth to remove the diseased tissue inside the pocket. This laser fiber selectively removes the diseased tissue and kills the germs that cause gum infections, while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This also improves access and visibility for better removal of the barnacles of calculus from the surface of the teeth. Tiny ultrasonic root cleaners vibrate these deposits away and flush them out with anti-bacterial rinse. Once the surfaces of the teeth are clean, the laser is used a second time, at the bottom of the pocket to remove any remaining debris and to sterilize the pocket, soft tissue, root, and bone. This also causes the blood to become sticky, creating a seal around the teeth. Once the seal is formed, we have created a clean, closed, and stable environment for healing to begin. We have tipped the scales in favor of regeneration versus degeneration.

Pain-Free Gum Regeneration with LANAP - Patient Testimonial with Dr. Mohan

Pain-Free Gum Regeneration with LANAP - Patient Testimonial with Dr. Mohan at I-Rise Dental Boutique in Del Mar, CA
When traditional gum surgery failed, Angela turned to Dr. Mohan for a better solution. Using LANAP laser technology, Dr. Mohan restored Angela’s gum health without cutting or sutures. Today, Angela enjoys a pain-free smile, improved implant support, and renewed confidence—all thanks to laser dentistry.

Speaker 1: Since I was 16, 16, 17 years old, I already started to have a little bit of periodontitis, and then when I had my kids, it really, really went in the wrong direction.

Speaker 2: Angela is a little bit of a tough cookie. When she came in, she was not very sure because she did have past experiences where she didn’t have gum surgery, but she never really recovered gum health ever.

Speaker 1: I got all kinds of injections and all kinds of treatments that I thought maybe they’re going to make it stop, but still, every doctor says, “Take care. Take care if you don’t want to lose your teeth.” So that was the first time when I figured out that, oh my God, that’s going to be a problem.

Speaker 2: Once you are a perio patient or you have gum disease, there is no real cure. So she has had painful surgeries, and it was a very traumatic experience for her.

So when she came in, we had to make her feel comfortable. We had to let her know that we are not going to do any surgery, but we are going to use laser to help restore her gum tissue and her oral health in general.

So we could get her to a place where we can get her some implants and give her full dentition—so we can give her function and, at the same time, use her stem cells to help regenerate her own periodontal health.

Speaker 1: Immediately after the laser, I saw the improvement. The gums are coming back to their position instead of being very down, kind of like retracted. They’re coming back.

The color is beautiful. It’s connected to the tooth. Even—I had an implant not done here, obviously—but I had an implant on the left side where the gum line was quite low, and I was like, wow. After the laser, it immediately went back.

So I will probably do it every year, this laser, because for me it works. Amazingly.

Speaker 2: We are in treatment and she’s very happy right now because she’s painless, and she doesn’t have to take a whole lot of drugs.

But at the same time, you always have to take care of yourself. You have to maintain, and you have to be under a protocol.

Laser and the LANAP treatment have given her a path, so she knows exactly what path she’s taking to gain her health.

Laser Therapy Restored My Life After Cancer - Harshana’s Story with Dr. Mohan

Laser Therapy Restored My Life After Cancer - Harshana’s Story with Dr. Mohan at I-Rise Dental Boutique in Del Mar, CA
After battling thyroid cancer, Harshana was left weak, in pain, and unable to eat due to severe oral inflammation. Then she met Dr. Mohan, who used PerioLase laser therapy to gently heal her tissues and regenerate healthy cells. Within weeks, Harshana was eating, smiling, and living again. Watch her inspiring story of recovery and gratitude—“She saved my whole life.”

Speaker 1: Here, the infection—because we have a crown, old crown—and we have a really bad infection going on, and they start the cancer from here. And I’m lucky they don’t go to my bone.

Yeah. Hi, my name is Harshana, and I do the laser treatment over here because I got the cancer.

Speaker 2: She was actually brought in by her family, and when she came in, she was extremely frail looking. She had just finished her cancer treatment for her cancer in her thyroid.

She couldn’t eat anything. She was extremely weak, and she looked very depressed. I asked her how she was feeling, and immediately she started crying.

Speaker 1: Before laser, I had to—I’m tired to eat because it hurt to open my mouth. I didn’t have any taste—just like cardboard. Whatever I ate, just like cardboard.

Speaker 2: I did notice a lot of inflammation inside of her mouth, which related to the radiation that she was going through. We call it osteonecrosis of the jaw, and severe inflammation of her cheek and soft tissue—to the point that it was burning her so much she couldn’t eat anything or drink anything.

She just could not enjoy her life at all. And that’s when I started her on her path of laser regeneration, where we use the PerioLase to help recuperate her healthy cells.

We did it very frequently—once a week for at least half an hour—and we could see the changes, amazing results. And in a month, she came back and told me that she was able to start eating normally, and the laser really helped her find her path to almost full recovery.

So we are very happy about where she is going.

Speaker 1: My life has changed now because I’m active. My smile is back. Everything back.

And whatever I want to eat, I can eat. I eat everything. I have everything. But without food—no life, no survival.

She saved my whole life. And everybody happy—for all my family and everything. Say thank you so much for her. She did a great job.
