What is gum disease?

Gum or periodontal disease is an infection that a dentist can easily detect. It is preventable with appropriate care and attention from the patient every day. Healthy oral hygiene habits and regular appointments at the dental office are encouraged to reduce the risk of developing this harmful and damaging gum infection.

What are the stages of periodontal disease?

There are three primary stages of periodontal disease, ranked from mild to severe:

 Gingivitis
 Periodontitis
 Advanced Periodontitis

With a proper diagnosis and treatment, many patients who visit Dr. Mohan can keep their condition from progressing into more destructive phases. Once later stages of gum disease are reached, it can result in the need to repair the smile and restore oral health and wellness. Proactively maintaining a healthy smile is the more appropriate way of reducing the risk of serious problems over time.

What conditions and problems can occur in those with periodontal disease?

When you allow periodontal disease to go untreated, it could lead to issues that you may not immediately think can be linked to gum disease. These issues are:

 Osteoporosis
 Strokes
 Alzheimer’s and dementia
 Cancer
 Heart disease
 Respiratory disease
 Diabetes
 Rheumatoid arthritis
 Pregnancy complications

What are some gum infection treatments that might be recommended?

Treatment options available at our practice include a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. This may be done manually by our dental hygienists or by using laser devices such as the LANAP protocol. This is a less invasive treatment option that can target harmful bacteria in the smile and help control the infection.
