Dental Veneers

What You Need To Do If Your Veneer Falls Off Unexpectedly

When you get veneers in Del Mar, California, your smile will instantly be revitalized and look more beautiful than it has in years. However, veneers (on occasion) can break or come entirely off a tooth. There are several different reasons why this can happen, but what is really important is that you visit a dentist like Dr. Anu Mohan and the team at I-Rise Dental Boutique to have it fixed as soon as possible.

Why Has Your Veneer Fallen Off?

There are several underlying issues that can result in veneer failure. Dentists commonly identify certain reasons why veneers may break or come off, such as:

  • Old veneer: When properly cared for, a veneer should last at least a decade. There are, however, situations where the bonding, which is keeping a veneer in place, weakens, and the veneer falls off.
  • Improper bonding: If you have new veneers and one or more have fallen off, chances are that the bonding was not done correctly.
  • Tooth decay: When a tooth begins to decay, it may no longer be strong enough to remain connected to a veneer. This is more likely to be the cause if a tooth has lost too much enamel.
  • Negligence: If you treat your veneered teeth harshly and do not follow recommendations and advice from your dentist regarding how you should care for your veneers, they will be more likely to break or fall off. This could include harmful habits like chewing on hard objects or ice or grinding your teeth.

Should You Re-attach Your Veneer?

If your veneer falls off in one piece, you may think you can glue it back on yourself. Please don’t! It is important that you do not try to re-attach your veneer at home using glue. This could cause more harm than good. The glue you have will not be suitable for bonding, meaning your veneer will fall off afterward anyway. Regular glue can be toxic, so putting it in your mouth is never a good idea.
